How I: Apply nail wraps!

I was speaking to the lovely Sophia from The Tattooed Tea Lady on twitter about applying nail wraps, and she mentioned I should do a tutorial post on how I apply them, so that I have decided to do! This is what works best for me and I use this method to apply nail wraps to clients. Most nail wraps, depending on the brand, will last up to 10 days on fingers and a month on toes. It varies on your fingers, depending on the type of work you do, how often you have your hands submerged in water etc. For longer term results with nail art, you can use a gel topcoat (although you have to invest in a UV lamp for this) or if you want to treat yourself, book into a nail tech and have nail art done with Calgel or a similar product. Nail wraps are a great effect but unfortunately they don't always last!

Anyway, here's how I apply them!

You will need:
  • Nail wraps of your choice; I'm using Trendy Nail Wraps which are available online or at Salon Services. The style I'm using is GN-212 Into the Blue.
  • Cotton wool pads
  • Some kind of nail polish remover to cleanse the nail bed. Pure acetone is best for this, however I strongly advise against using acetone if you have weak or brittle nails. I'm not using acetone at the moment because I'm unhappy with the condition of my nails.
  • A regular nail file, mine is a file and buffer in one.
  • A coarser grit or sapphire nail file.
  • Cuticle pusher
  • Tweezers
  • Nail scissors
  • A hairdryer
  • Nail polish (optional, I'm only doing an accent nail with the wraps)
Step One - Nail Prep

Photobucket

You firstly want to prepare the nail you will be working with. That means filing it to shape, ensuring your cuticles are neat and tidy, cleansing it with the nail polish remover to remove any excess dirt or oils, and buffing the natural shine from it. This helps the nail wrap to adhere to the surface more easily. Note: when buffing the surface of your nail, please be careful to pull the buffer from the bottom of your nail to the top, in one direction only. Do this in a gentle movement to ensure that you do not damage your natural nail.

Step Two - Picking the Wrap

Photobucket

You then have to pick which wrap will best fit your natural nail. If you are lucky, you won't have to do much cutting (like me with this one!) Place the wrap (unheated) on your nail, and have a look to see how it will eventually fit. Use curved nail scissors to trim around the edges until you are happy
with how the nail wrap will fit your nail.

Step Three - Heating the Nail Wrap

Photobucket

I find that all nail wraps stick easier and last longer when they have been heated prior to application. This allows the glue on the adhesive side to become wet, therefore helping it to stick to your nail. Warning!! Be extremely careful when heating nail wraps, as they have metallic elements they become very hot quickly and can burn you easily. You should stick the wrap to the tip of your finger as shown in the picture above, and heat it until it curves as shown in the picture below. (On low heat on the hairdryer this normally takes 10-15 seconds) Once the nail wrap has become flexible like this, it is time to apply it to your nail!

Step Four - Applying the Wrap

Photobucket

As quickly as you can, move the wrap onto the nail, starting from the cuticle edge. If you don't align it properly, and have to peel it off, go back to step three and reheat. Push the cuticle edge down with your finger until it sticks, then slowly press the nail wrap in an upwards motion, removing air bubbles as you go. Once you get to the top of your nail, pull the sides of the wrap down to fit with the natural curvature of your nail.

Step Five - Cutting and Shaping

Photobucket

Photobucket

Once you are happy that your wrap is sitting flush on your nail, it's time to cut and shape it. When I do this, I cut it with about 1/4 to 1/2 a centimetre left over the top of the nail. In order to file it, fold the wrap down over the end of the nail. Use the coarser file and file away the remainder of the wrap. Do this very gently as the coarser file will damage your nail if you are too rough. You simply want to remove the excess wrap. I often find once the excess has been removed, it helps to file away any flyaway bits with a normal file, just as you would your natural nail.

And voila! You are done. Pretty nail wrap action.

Just to remind you, once the nail wrap is securely on the nail, do not put the hairdryer on it. Believe me, it will be painful!

Some tips to keep your nail wraps on

I always advise clients when they want nail wraps on their fingernails, that they are not guaranteed to last. This is just due to general wear and tear. Here is a few handy hints to keep them on a bit longer;

  1. Get someone else to do the washing up! Prolonged contact with water will make the glue less sticky and therefore will affect how long your wraps stay in place.
  2. Try not to pick at them, I know it's difficult and I am guilty of it too.
  3. If you feel the edges fraying slightly or lifting, use a bit of clear nail polish underneath and that should hold them for a day or so more.
  4. Some nail techs will advise to put glue on the very edges of your nail when the wrap has been applied. This definitely will make them last longer, but can sometimes affect the desired look of the nail wraps and often makes them more difficult to remove.
  5. Keep any kind of hand cream/cuticle oil away from your nails.
Removing Nail Wraps

After about five or so days, it is likely that you will want to take them off. They will either be annoying you or (if your like me!) you will want to try out some new nail polish you've just bought. When nail wraps have been applied with heat, you must simply not just pull them off, as they can take the top layer of nail off. When removing, hold a hairdryer about 30cm away from your nails and heat gently (on low, for about 5-10 seconds) When this has been done, you should be able to slowly lift away the wrap, with a gentle movement. This will ensure minimal damage to your natural nails. Afterwards, I always recommend giving yourself a quick manicure. If anyone would like to know how I do a quick mani then let me know!

Hope this post was helpful, any questions, I will be happy to answer!

Meet my dogs!

Hi everyone.

This is going to be a post all about my lovely dogs. I have four (yes, four!) Cavalier King Charles Spaniels! They are such lovely natured little things and in my opinion are the most gorgeous beings on the planet! I'll do a little mini profile of each and add lots of pictures. Please be aware we do call our dogs by some silly nicknames which I will include!

Firstly, Troy!

Name: Troy
Colour: Blenheim
Age: 4, 5 in December
Nicknames: Boo-boo, Grumps
Likes: Daisy, sleeping and his mummy
Dislikes: The puppies and the postman
Temperament: He's a little grumpy, but he is surrounded by spring chickens! He suffered a loss (our Toby, his brother died suddenly last year) and he has never really been the same! He does like to play with the puppies occasionally but he'd rather sleep or be grumpy, or bark at his girlfriend Daisy who lives in the cottage behind us! When he does play, it is so cute, he really gets into it! Adorable. He also hates getting photos taken, unlike all the others who are complete posers! So I only managed to snap a few.

Next, Tyler!

Name: Tyler
Age: 1, 2 in June 2013
Colour: Blenheim
Nicknames: Ty, Luv-luv, Tyler Graham
Likes: Cuddling, doing tricks, posing and the hairdryer
Dislikes: When Treacle pulls his ears!
Temperament: Now, Ty is a complete opposite to Troy. He's such a fun loving boy and loves to play and get into mischief! He loves cuddles, the heat from the hairdryer and being brushed. He's such a pampered boy and has the loveliest coat. He is generally one of the best natured dogs I have ever met, and is always up for a belly rub!

Now, Treacle...

Name: Treacle
Age: Just turned 1!
Colour: Black and Tan
Nicknames: Peekie, Peeks, Sir Peeksalot
Likes: Moaning, pulling Tyler's ears and stealing toys!
Dislikes: Not being cuddled, Troy's girlfriend Daisy!
Temperament: Treacle may be the moaniest but most beautiful dog I have ever met. He is quite aware of how beautiful he is and tries to use it to his advantage by swishing his fur around! He is a complete mummy's boy and loves cuddles! He may also have the most annoying bark ever, ha! He is adorable though and has the cutest (almost human-like) expressions. He loves chasing his sister Saffie around and pulling Tyler's ears!

And finally, little Saffie!

Name: Saffie
Age: Just turned 1!
Colour: Ruby
Nicknames: Safs, Falafel, Saffie-Lou-Who
Likes: Flirting with anything that moves and annoying her brothers.
Dislikes: Not being the centre of attention!
Temperament: Saffie is Treacle's biological sister (they are from the same litter) although she is half his size! She is absolutely tiny (we call her a teapot cavalier, ha!) and she is the loveliest little girlie! She's so precious but she literally will flirt and flutter her eyelashes and tail at anything that will pay her attention. She is super cute and loves a cuddle. She definitely is the little pack leader, the boys will do anything she says!

Told you we had some weird nicknames for our dogs!!! I'll insert some more random pictures now.

Random Thoughts: Count Your Blessings

This is going to be a bit of a random (possibly rambling, personal and philosophical) post. There's so much negativity in the world and I thought that I'd try and drum up a bit of positivity. I am an optimist, for definite. That doesn't mean I'm always happy, because no one is truly happy all the time. I do however believe that happiness comes a lot from your attitude and your views toward things.

So I thought I'd share something that helps me to stay positive, day to day and through hard times. I know from the title this seems (possibly, to some) like a religious post, but that isn't the case. It's something I do on a daily basis, often several times a day. People may consider it a bit 'weird', but it really does help to keep me positive and thankful for everything that I have in my life.

So, what do I do? I list, to myself, what I have to be thankful for. When I'm having what seems like a bad day, I take five minutes out, take a deep breath and some 'me' time and say to myself;

"This may seem awful right now, but I have, an amazing mum, who is beautiful person, is full of wisdom, is generous, intelligent and a great role model. I have a fiance who I love and who adores me. I have a wonderful sister. My family may be a little crazy at times but they are always there for me and we are a team. I have a beautiful Goddaughter who lights up my life. I have an amazing group of close friends who I can always trust to be loyal, dependable and are able to make me laugh. I have been blessed with so many people (and dogs!) in my life and I have learned so much from every one of them."

After saying something like this to myself, the problem at hand always seems so much less stressful, and much easier to manage. If I'm having a bad day, counting my blessings puts it into perspective and shows me that I am really lucky. I also do this every night before I go to sleep.

I know that, for some problems, this may seem insignifcant. So many horrible things exist in this world that nothing will really make you feel better. I too, have gone through such stages and those experiences have taught me to do this on a regular basis. Life is hard sometimes, but trying to be optimistic has really helped me.

I also think that now, we are surrounded by so much negativity and rely on a negative mindset. I hope this little idea helps just one person to feel a bit better.

Five Loves: Perfumes

Here's a look at some of my favourite perfumes!!

Prada Candy (Eau de Parfum)

Excuse the fact this picture is a bit bright! Prada Candy is my all time (new) favourite perfume. I got it for Christmas 2011 and I absolutely adore how it smells.

Heart Notes: Benzoin
Top Notes: Musk
Base Notes: Caramel

That's the official line on it. To me it smells like a wonderful mix of candyfloss and vanilla cupcakes. It is very sweet as the name suggests, it smells just like 'candy' or a sweet shop. When I wear it it really does make me so happy all day. It is a kind of summery scent, but I definitely don't mind wearing it all year round. I've worn it since I got it at Christmas and was almost finished the bottle, so my fiance kindly got me the hugest bottle I've ever seen recently as part of my birthday present. I think this will be a firm favourite for a long time!

RRP for 30ml - £36.99
              50ml - £52.50
              80ml - £69.50 (Perfume Shop)

Illamasqua Freak (Eau de Parfum)

I got Illamasqua Freak for Christmas last year too, and it is absolutely beautiful! Not a fragrance I would typically go for, but when I smelt it, I fell head over heels!

Heart Notes: Poison Hemlock, Datura and Queen of the Night Blossom
Top Notes: Black Davana, Opium flower and Belladonna
Base Notes: Frankincense, Oud and Myrrh

I tend to favour really sweet scents, floral and clean scents and somehow this seems to combine all of those into a beautiful heady mixture. I have been wearing this through the spring but it is definitely more of an autumn/winter scent to me, so I've decided to save it and start using it again in September/October time! This perfume reminds me of winter and Christmas and funnily enough when I looked up the official base notes it turned out it has frankincense and myrrh in it. The only think I would change about this would be to make the scent a bit longer lasting. I love Illamasqua as a brand and this perfume is flawless!

RRP for 75ml - £59.00 (Illamasqua website)

Prada Milano Infusion D'Iris (Eau de Parfum)

I got this perfume after 'borrowing' half of my mums bottle! Its a beautiful, fresh, clean scent.

Heart Notes: Iris Palladia
Top Notes: Mandarin, Orange Blossom, Neroli
Base Notes: Incense, Benzoin, Cedarwood

I think it is the citrus in this scent which makes it feel so 'clean'. I feel like it's the perfect scent to wear on an everyday basis to work, it feels very professional yet beautiful and it makes me feel really confident! Again it is definitely more of a summer scent, but it could definitely take you into autumn!

RRP for 30ml - £39.50
              50ml - £53.50
              80ml - £71.50 (Perfume shop)

Boss Orange Sunset (Eau de Toilette)

BOSS Orange Sunset is my favourite, everyday, go-to perfume. (As you can see, I hardly have any left!)

Heart Notes: White Flowers, Orange Blossom
Top Notes: Sweet Apples
Base Notes: Sandalwood, Olive Wood, Vanilla

This is such a lovely clean scent, which is easy to wear everyday. As it is an EDT, it is a lot lighter and easy to wear. When it wears off, it leaves a lovely faint smell on your skin. It is really sweet, and reminds me of New York City (sob - take me back!) which is also why it's one of my favourites. Its also much less expensive than the others!

RRP for 75ml - £49.99 (On sale for £29.99 atm!) (Perfume shop)

Jean Paul Gaultier Classique (Eau de Toilette)

This has been one of my favourite perfumes for the past 6-7 years! I get a new bottle every Christmas. It is so beautiful, a perfect feminine, sexy scent.

Heart Notes: Iris, Orchid, Plum, Ginger, Ylang-ylang
Top Notes: Rose, Star Aniseed, Orange, Mandarin and Pear liquer
Base Notes: Musk, Vanilla, Woody Amber

If you have smelled this perfume, you'll know exactly why it will probably always be my favourite perfume. Its timeless. You can wear it day or night, its soft, floral but also musky and it's a really sexy scent! The men's version is also SO amazing. It is the sexiest scent on a guy!

RRP for 20ml - £27.50
              50ml - £47.99
             100ml -£68.99 (Perfume shop)

What's your favourite perfume? I love to hear recommendations to try out!
